Fantasy Hockey: Combing the Waiver Wire

It is all-star weekend in the NHL. Now is the time to comb the waiver wire and find that one player that might be available that could turn your season around coming down the stretch.

Here are some of this week’s best pick ups.

Nick Bonino, C, Predators: Bonino is centering arguably the Preds best line right now with Kevin Fiala and Callie Jarnkrok. He is a finisher and can distribute the puck. Bonino is a worthy pick up in DFS because his cross category potential.

Rick Nash, LW, RW, Rangers: The veteran winger is only owned in 31% of ESPN leagues. Nash is starting to heat up and is up to 15 goals on the season. He is a worthy pick in DFS in the second half of the season especially if the Rangers decide to sell and he is traded.

Bo Horvat, C, Canucks: After missing 18 games with a leg injury, the Canucks best all around player is back. Vancouver played well in Horvat’s absence with several players stepping up to fill the void. With Horvat back, he will assume his customary number one center role. He’s only owned in 47% of ESPN standard leagues. Grab him!

Travis Konecny, C, LW, RW, Flyers: Konecny is playing on the Flyers second line now and the move is paying off for him as he has scored a goal in four straight games. If you are looking for a player to come off your bench who is versatile and offers cross category production, pick up Konecny.

Ryan Spooner, C, Bruins: Spooner has four goals and two assists in his last eight games. He has played much better of late and will be counted on to fill the scoring void left by the suspension of Brad Marchand. Spooner is worth adding as a cheap option in DFS.

Jake Muzzin, D, Kings: The veteran rearguard has scored 5 goals and has 23 assists on the season. He quarterbacks the Kings second power play unit and logs 22 minutes of ice time. Muzzin is available in 23% of ESPN standard league. If by chance he is available in your league, grab him now.

Chris Kunitz, LW, Lightning: The 38 year old veteran continues to be a cross category producer. He only has 7 goals on the season but with Ondrej Palat out 6-8 weeks with an injury, expect the veteran winger’s ice time and production to go up.

Philipp Grubauer, G, Capitals: Grubauer has been terrific this season and will get more starts in the second half of the season with the Caps opting to rest starter Braden Holtby before the playoffs. Grubauer might be worth grabbing down the stretch if you are fighting for a playoff spot and could use those extra goalie points.
