Paul George staying with the Thunder is a surprise.
NBA and NHL Free Agency have dominated the sports landscape this week. Here are ten thoughts on the week that was in fantasy sports.
1. Paul George re-signing with the Thunder is not a surprise. He is a loyal guy and he obviously feels like he can play with Russell Westbrook or he would have tested the market.
2. The Rockets took a risk giving Chris Paul a four year, $160 million dollar deal but they didn’t have a choice. The Rockets are right there with Golden State and they need Paul if they want to beat them and get to the Finals.
3. Kevin Durant is staying in Golden State after signing what amounts to a two year, $61.5 million dollar deal. It’s a bargain by today’s NBA standards but Durant likes winning championships so he’s staying for at least another season.
4. LeBron to the Lakers is far from a sure thing. Not unless Magic Johnson can sign DeMarcus Cousins and then find a way to add a third star. Unless of course James thinks he can win with what’s already there. I think Philly is now his best bet.
5. Free agent RW James Van Riemsdyk is signing with the Flyers. It is a great move for him and fantasy owners alike. JVR is your prototypical power forward who can camp in front of the net and finish. He is the ideal fit for the Flyers offensively.
6. Still nothing on the John Tavares front. The longer this goes, the more it favors the Islanders. It means Tavares is legitimately torn in regards of what to do.
7. Nationals rookie Juan Soto had quote the night on Thursday night against the Phillies. Soto hit two home runs and drove in five. It was Soto’s second two home run game in two weeks. Soto also has a two home run game this season against the Yankees. The young man is impressive at the plate.
8. Cubs starter Yu Darvish was on track to return this weekend but had a set back during a bullpen session. Darvish has been a huge disappointment for the Cubs and fantasy owners alike. I know. I drafted him.
9. Giants starter Johnny Cueto had another quality outing last night and could be back in the Giants rotation next week. That’s great news for the Giants who are in playoff contention and for patient fantasy owners like me.
10. The Buccaneers are in a tough spot with Jameis Winston. The right thing to do would be to release Winston but the Bucs are not going to do that. Tampa has to hope that their franchise quarterback has an awaken and matures.
